July's bounty..........

The Potager is providing very well for us thus far.......with nothing more than a pesky ground squirrel (who successfully at all my cucumber transplants), but other than that, the bounty is good....
(this picture taken just a few days ago-you can see the 2nd planting of spinach just coming up!)
I picked an assortment last night to share with the family...........
hot Hungarian peppers, jalapeno peppers, yellow wax beans, yellow zucchini, curly leaf parsley, purple and green basil, bunching onions, variegated mint, and some cilantro.....

~Hope you are enjoying your garden~

Eat the benefits.......

Have you ever grown your own food? and picked it and then steamed it (like broccoli)? then you know the nutrition is PACKED in those wonderful green blossoms........

if you don't know what I'm talking about.....then be the first ones at your local farmer's market, get a bunch of broccoli, go home and eat as soon as you walk through the door - add some fresh butter (no salt) and wow - there isn't anything I can quite compare that to!

p.s. don't be surprised if you see 1/4 acre of this magically delicious tasting veggie at the farm here ;)

Succession planting.......

what is succession planting?

it's when you harvest a crop, and it leaves bare dirt, then you plant something in it's place.....

beets are always a great choice......

they are quick to grow, you eat the thinnings, and they preserve well..............

sweet honey.................

my Potager, the kitchen garden, is just about 40 paces from my kitchen door......the prairie, however, is over 2 acres away................but well worth the walk...........

flowers have taken root and will re-seed this fall..........what has this got to do with my Potager?

bees

bees are plentiful on all the good clover and flowers in the prairie (compass plant shown here)

bees pollinate my vegetables, and they will travel over 5 miles from their hive just to do their job, which in turn produces vegetables and flowers for me!

yeah to the bees.......

i dream of a bee hive...........dreaming..............................

(click on bee picture for more information on this incredible insect!)

enjoy your day!

Onions........

Onions are so very easy to grow...you just have to make sure you plant them at
the appropriate depth......
(pictured above are a variety...including common red, walla-walla, and vadalia)
they are quick to grow if given the proper environment as well.....
the picture below is hilarious! It should be going to the theme: "there she is....Miss America"
but I'm so glad all the onions have made it, and it's time for planting the next "set"

Enjoy your day! - below are the nutritional facts about onions....
